Ingredients: (what you will need for the best buffalo chicken dip recipe) This is for a single batch

  • 1 pound of boneless skinless chicken breast (or approx 2-3 large chicken breasts)
  • 1 cup of ranch dressing ( Hidden Valley, Kraft, or Wishbone)
  • 1 cup of Franks Original Red Hot (do not substitute this please)
  • 1 8 oz block of cream cheese (do not use fat free, 1/3rd less fat OK)
  • 1 package of fancy shredded sharp cheddar cheese (2 cups)
  • Green onions (optional)

you will also need the following items to dip into the best buffalo chicken dip... Bite size tortilla chips, celery, wheat thins, triscuits or a combination of all of them.

Here are your step by step instructions:

cream cheese cubes
  • Evenly sprinkle the fancy shredded cheese on top of the cream cheese cubes.

sharp cheddar and cream cheese
  • Pour the 1 cup of ranch and the 1 cup of Franks Red Hot on top of the cheesy mixture and place the dish into the oven uncovered for 7 to 10 minutes

Red hot and ranch

You will want to stir the mixture after about 7 to 10 minutes and put it back in the oven and bake an additional 7 to 10 minutes and stir until mixture and cream cheese is well mixed together.

  • While the mixture is baking and your chicken is done boiling you will want to shred your chicken. The best way to do this is by putting the pan into the sink and running cold water over the chicken to speed up the process, once cooled you may hand shred the chicken into a bowl

shredded chicken breast

You are almost done

  • After the cheesy mixture is done baking and mixed together well you may now add the chicken, simply pour the chicken on top of the mixture, carefully stir the mixture well and cover with aluminum foil and bake an additional 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Once baked you can carefully pour into your serving bowl, garnish with green onion and celery and enjoy!

The best buffalo chicken dip

There you have it, The Best Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe

OK now that you have finished your masterpiece lets talk about what you have just created.

This buffalo chicken dip recipe is a single batch and it will fill the baking dish pretty full, it will be enough for about a gathering of 4 to 8 people if their is other food around.

What I have learned from taking this buffalo dip to parties or gatherings is that I never make a single batch anymore and here is why... first of all you will want to sit a bowl back for yourself to enjoy at another time, and second It just goes to darn fast!

At minimum I make a batch and a half or a double batch( Its not hard to do the math on the ingredients and use a larger Pyrex or Anchor style baking dish.

OK why not canned chicken? simply put it is just plain icky, don't get me wrong if you are using it for cold chicken salad (you can also add a splash of franks red hot for a zesty kick to your chicken salad) then its not to bad however for buffalo chicken dip it's unique canned flavor can over power the buffalo taste. If you are in a crunch and don't have time to boil the chicken then just don't make it! no I'm kidding you can still make it I suggest using the pre grilled chicken strips from your grocery store refrigerator section, I think they are made by Tyson, crumble them up and voila!

Now some tips and advice...

Meatless buffalo chicken dip recipe. OK sounds funny but it is good and not only for dipping but for other things as well like pouring over homemade macaroni and cheese, topping diced potatoes or spreading on toasted sliced asiago cheese bread or bagels, hello can you say yummy! (y-u-m-m-y) I thought you could

Now for the meatless buffalo chicken dip recipe: designed for my friend Sara.

Sara's meatless buffalo chicken dip recipe:

  • do not add chicken
  • add a little less franks red hot

Now how simple was that? OK we might have some blue cheese lovers in the house, if you love blue cheese raise your hand, Stop! put your hand down you look like a fool to the person on the couch behind you who has no idea why you just raised one hand. There is one simple reason why the best buffalo chicken dip recipe calls for ranch instead of blue cheese and that's because not everybody likes blue cheese but almost everybody loves ranch, simple as that.

If you love blue cheese, first put your hand down and second substitute the ranch dressing for blue cheese dressing, you can also add blue cheese crumbles. I myself can't stand blue cheese however there is a pre made buffalo blue cheese dip that I love made by a berry farm in Urbana Ohio called Robert Rothschild, this stuff is Great! Where can you get it well I buy it from my Fathers framing and gift store in Indian lake Ohio www.framingbyfuller.com other than that you may search for it online unless you live by Indian Lake or Urbana Ohio.

OK if you don't like your buffalo dip to spicy you can add less franks red hot, if you do not care for franks red hot then you should try a mixture of hooters hot and mild wing sauce even though I said not to substitute, it's your buffalo chicken dip recipe do what you want with it.

And finally last but not least and I tell you this for your own benefit, be ready to email this recipe to every one you know or print or hand write it and be prepared to give it to the people at the party you go to. I have been making this dip for years and taking it to parties and gatherings of all sizes I just assumed every one would know how to make it by now, but they don't so now you do and I can stop hand writing it on an envelope for people, not that I minded Enjoy your buffalo chicken dip!

Please Note: No buffalo's were harmed in the making of this dip

I've had this dip, and it is, by far, the best dip I've ever had. I recomend using wheat thins to dip with. I've used other crackers and chips, and they're fine, but I enjoyed the wheat thins the most. Anyone reading this already wants to try making this dip. Do yourself a favor and just do it. You won't be disappointed.

I LOVE buffalo chicken dip but I gotta say, boiled chicken? Sounds almost as gross as canned chicken. I season & grill chicken legs, thighs, & whole breasts. Much more flavorful than just boneless, skinless breasts. I also like to add crumbled blue cheese to mine. I make it in a crock pot, great for keeping it warm during the party.

I made this dip for a summer get together today and it was a hit! I had 7 people ask for the recipe ( including a few men so you KNOW it's really good!)This is a keeper-thanks for sharing!

Leslie 2 years ago

Hey Mike, this sounds good. I make this quite often... and I have found that I like to use blue cheese dressing instead... and I agre on the Frank's I have even used the Franks Wing sauce too.. equally good results. However...one thing you should try... try grilling your chicken breast or chicken breast tenderloins ( they cook quicker) I roll mine in hot sauce then grill them I shred the chicken when done.. and I add my hot sauce to my chicken and let that sit while I stir together my cheeses. the rest is the same... except I also started using a colby jack blend...

yummy....

Amazing receipe! So glad I tried it! It was plenty to eat for my family of three! Even my five year old loved it. Not too spicey. Just a little kick to it. I wouldn't change a thing about this receipe. It was greeeat with the green onions on top! We liked it best with celery:)

This stuff is SO good.

one tip, if you are really pressed for time, is to pick up a rotisserie chicken from the grocer and use that meat in the dip.

KAM 2 years ago

Excellent and your right the BEST buffalo dip, I have been using this recipe (I got it from a co-worker) and everywhere I go people ask for the recipe. And everytime I go somewhere I'm asked to make it, infact I will be making it tomorrow night (double batch)! The ratio is perfect, and I just might have to try it with blue cheese. Always a hit!

KM 2 years ago

Made this for a family get together over the weekend. I added 4 slices of colby jack when I added the chicken to try and cut down on the hotness (I'll cut back on the hot sauce in the future). IT WAS GREAT!!! Loved it with celery and pita chips for dipping!

I have made this dip a few times now..definately better with the ranch (and I love blue cheese). I have received many compliments from others on this dip- by far the best! Thank you.

Don Wayne 2 years ago

I wish I knew what I did wrong. I followed the recipe to the letter, but it came out tasting like vinegar and little else. If anyone has any suggestions on what I might have done wrong, or if this is how it is, and I just do not like the taste, please let me know. Thanks.

Mike Fuller profile image

Mike Fuller Hub Author 2 years ago

Don, the only thing I can think of is I had a batch I had to throw out because the Ranch dressing was expired, It tasted terrible. I had just bought the Ranch at Walmart and ruined a double batch. I called Walmart and they replaced all the ingredients I used. The only other thing would be bad hot sauce which is vinegar based. Good Luck.

Wendy Scalzo 2 years ago

I made 2 batches (1 with ranch, 1 with blue cheese) for my niece's birthday party. They were both devoured quickly. The next day, just as you said, I was barraged with requests for the recipe. I ended up posting your page on my Facebook. I used chicken breast tenders and simmered them in a little Franks on the stove top and being a produce department clerk, I opted for Marzettis dressings. Y-U-M-M-Y!! Thanks, Mike!!! Your dip made the party extra special.

Mary Ann 2 years ago

Absolutely delicious! You rock! I used sliced baguette rounds for dipping and it was perfect :)

smart lipo 24 months ago

This is excellent. I've made this dish many times, and everyone keeps requesting it again. I mix 1/2 Ranch dressing and 1/2 blue cheese. I do not use the chedder cheese. I tried it once, and did not care for the oily orange greasy appearance. A few other "improvements" I've made are I melt 1/2 a stick of butter before warming the meat in the frying pan. Also, I recently began substituting ground turky and found it much eaiser than cooking and shredding chicken. It has a nicer texture in the dip, and tastes the same.

Sue 24 months ago

OMG...this is the best dip I have ever eaten!

Destiny 23 months ago

Hi Mike I just tried your dip, but i didn't have great success I was going for a double portion to feed about 18ppl. I double the ingredients 2 ranch 2 frank's hot sauce and 4 cups of cheese. I got Don's results just lots of oil and vinegar. Any pointers?

Val 23 months ago

This is delicious! I make it without the chicken(Sara's recipe) because my husband is a veggie. All the meat eaters who try it , like it just as much! Thanks, Mike!

foodlover 23 months ago

hi just wondering if you have more cream cheese than 1 8 oz block? it just doesn't seem proportional to the other ingredients in your video, picture or when I prepared this myself.

Mike Fuller profile image

Mike Fuller Hub Author 23 months ago

I never make a single batch anymore, it just goes to quickly. It is quite possible I was making a double or batch and a half in the video or may have just added a little extra cream cheese that I had laying around. Once it is made I always tweak it a little to taste. If you are getting a orange oily look, it is cooking to long or getting hot to quickly, try covering it with foil and turning down the heat. If you over cook it the oil from the cheese tends to seperate and the red hot turns it into orangeish color.

Kdub 22 months ago

Is it ok to keep in a crockpot for parties?

mike  22 months ago

Yes just keep on low and don't overheat. I put it in a crock pot all the time for parties, just give it a stir every once in awhile. Also fantastic with pretzel crisps.

Rob Marks 21 months ago

Mike you're the man. I love your recipes. The humor in the descriptions is honestly the best part of following your recipes. Keep up the good work brother.

This dip is amazing.... and i cannot tell you how happy it makes me that someone else agrees that the thought of canned chicken breast in ANYTHING is absolutely repulsive. I followed the recipe very closely, however, i substituted light ranch for full-fat version, and light cream cheese for the regular version. I kept the shredded cheese the same, because for me personally, low-fat cheddar totally sucks. Lastly, franks sells a buffalo red-hot sauce, so i used that. My company was raving about it!! Soooooo good, and I have a batch in the oven right now for my bf to enjoy while he watches football today. This is a keeper!!!

Jimmy 17 months ago

I love this dip so much! I actually cut up some raw onions and put them in the dip too, it is sooo good. Never tried cooking them with the onions, they are just add-ins once it is all done. Should try it!

lizzy 14 months ago

I've been making this for quite some time now and i just made a new batch. Only problem...not even a half a cup of sharp cheddar. So i substituted mozz and it doesn't taste the same. :( Lesson learned...if you don't have enough cheese...don't make it!

Btw I make it without the chicken and I find it tastes a whole lot better.

Danielle 14 months ago

Do you change the cooking times on the meatless version? I love it with the chicken, but don't always have it on hand. What would you recommend? Keep the times the same? Or could I cook it on the stovetop? Thanks!

Mike Fuller profile image

Mike Fuller Hub Author 14 months ago

You probably could cook it on the stove top if you stir it frequently so it doesn't scorch, but I always bake mine with or without chicken. Bake time is still about the same, maybe a few minutes less. whatever It takes to melt and blend it all together. Thanks for the comments and suggestions... Mike http://www.mikefuller.net

MIke C 14 months ago

The only technical comment I have is that it is better to grill the chicken on the gas grill or in a pan rather than boiling it. Then chop it up nicely with a knife. You see, boiling it, then separating it under water removes all the great juice stock within the meat. One might argue that we boil chicken for soup. But keep in mind that juice stock is part of the soup we consume. I do agree with the writer that the canned chicken is nasty beyond belief... and Id hate to see or know the factory that produces it and the chickens they use.

I entertain regularly, and am always looking for tasty apps to serve my guests. I was a little apprehensive to try this recipe at first, simply because I wasn't convinced that 5 ingredients could make it a hit ( I looked on Food Network and most of their recipes called for tons of ingredients). Let me tell you, this has been the absolute hit of all my parties!!! It is consistently delicious, and my guests always rave about it!

I'd love to try more of your recipes. Thanks so much!!!!

I make this for every holiday/party and it's always a big hit. Thanks so much!

Triple Batch today. Sent about half of it to super bowl party for teens. I am sure there will not be leftovers. I tried the retro Doritos Taco Flavor in the dip. They tasted great but I am sure have exceeded my salt intake for the month. I used 1/3 less fat Philly and the light Hidden Valley Ranch. Much less oil on top when baking. The Kens Buttermilk Ranch was great last time but combined with regular Philly left more oil on top.

Quick question about the dip. I am making it for the first time, and will be quadrupling the recipe for a huge family gathering. I would like to know if I can just make it in a crock pot or do I still need to make it as the recipe states and then put it in a crock pot to keep warm? I know the chicken would need to be added last to it, but I want to make sure it is okay to follow the instructions by substituting a crock pot instead of oven.

Mike Fuller profile image

Mike Fuller Hub Author 11 months ago

You can make it in a crockpot but the cooking time will vary, make sure you stir often and dont overheat or it will look orange and oily on top, good luck.

Hey! You make yours just about the same way I make mine (and I too swear by Franks and shredding the chicken-HATE canned) The first time I had ever made it I accidently put the celery into it and havent changed ever since. I just dice it up really small and add it in with the chicken it gives it an added texture and I think makes it better you should try it!.... I'm making this for a tailgating party. Wonder what it would be like to use Spicy ranch dressing? Just a little more spicy?

Jill 3 months ago

Followed directions to a T and it turned out extremely greasy. Any thoughts on why? It was like the grease/hot sauce was floating on top when removed from oven.

Mike Fuller profile image

Mike Fuller Hub Author 3 months ago

Hey Jill, I do this by accident about every 4th batch, over ccooking or heating will cause the oils from the cheeses to rises to the surface in a orangeish color from the red hot. It usually will taste ok but it annoys me because it doesnt present itself well and is not as creamy. Baking times vary and you dont want to over cook the buffalo chicken dip. Thanks for the comment, I will add this warning to the recipe

DiniLewis 3 months ago

Dont boil or use can chicken, thats nasty, i marinate my chicken over nht in buff sauce, then i either bake in the oven or cook it on the grill, youll notice a major taste difference in your dip,

Any tips on saving a dip that's been overcooked. I have made it a few times and it's always a bit. I used a cassarole dish with a lid this time instead of tinfoil and it's separated and oily. I have a party tomorrow and zero time to remake it.

I just made this for a work event and I have to say the taste test is AMAZING! I can't wait to hear everyone else's reactions. But this is the buffalo chicken dip you should make!

The only suggestion I have to first-timers is to make sure you cut your cream cheese into small pieces. I had larger cubes and some of them didn't melt until the very end. It worked out though.

just wanted to let you know this was the best. I made it a few weeks ago, everyone loved it. The only problem is i dont use hotsauce. I use the Louisiana Supreme chicken wing sauce. I find it more fitting for the name. Only use the full cup if you like it HOT! Im making it again for Thanksgiving. I am going to make it with 1/2 cup this time. Wish me luck. First time i am bringing a dish to the in-laws house.:0 Happy Thanksgiving everyone! :)

I made this dip and stepped it up a notch. I smoked a chicken and then used the smoked chicken in the dip.It was over the top good!!!!!!!!!

I think men are genetically predisposed to LOVE this dip.

I've taken it to our church small group events a couple of times. When we were recently discussing the menu for an upcoming event, to a man--they ALL asked if I was bringing the Buffalo chicken dip. It makes it easy for me to decide what to take.

Best most delicious shortcut ever..... Just debone a rotisserie chicken and use that! Awesome recipe. Thanks so much for sharing. I also added a smidgen of blue cheese crumbles, I normally hate blue cheese, but I feel like it gives a great bite to the dip and adds some depth!

Yes. I use container in ziplock bag or just double up ziplock freezer bags. Thanks for the comment.

Almost the best, I grill my chicken, who wants boiled chicken? Also I use whipped cream cheese and a teaspoon of vinegar.

Wow thank you for this easy recipe! I've been searching everywhere for the perfect recipe. Going to use left over roasted chicken. Should be yummy!

By the way, why can't I mix it all together & then bake it? Seems easier, will it taste much different?

Thank you for this great recipe! It was a huge hit at our Christmas Party. It was the only thing that was completely gone at the end of the night and I even doubled the recipe. I am making it again for a party tonight! Love it!

I found this recipe at walmart a few months ago and I got to say it's awesome! The last couple times I've made it I substituted Hooters sauce instead of Red Hots and I will never go back, it's so AMAZING!!!
